During the week of September 30, 2013, through October 6, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,005 DUI arrests compared with 1,084 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.3 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,041 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,120 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.1 percent.

So far this year, there were 23 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 30 during the same period last year, a decrease of 23.3 percent.

To date, 12 fatalities were related to drugs only (5), alcohol only (1), or a combination of both (6).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
