During the week of October 18, 2010, through October 24, 2010, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,259 DUI arrests compared with 1,125 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,103 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,289 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14.4 percent.

So far this year, there were 23 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 19 during the same period last year, an increase of 21.1 percent.

To date, 20 fatalities this year were related to drugs (11), alcohol (10) or a combination of both (6 of the 20).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
