A fire in the Keaukaha area of Hilo caused the closure of Kalanianaʻole Avenue for several hours Friday (May 2).

At approximately 8:18 a.m., South Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of a fire on the 1900 block of Kalanianaʻole Avenue. Upon arrival, they found an older single-family dwelling and surrounding shrubbery burning and Fire Department personnel fighting the flames.

Due to the location, traffic was stopped all the way to Richardson Beach Park until firefighters were able to bring the fire under control. The road was reopened at 12:30 p.m.

Fire Department personnel are investigating the cause of the fire.
