Hawaii County police have opened a coroner’s inquest case in connection with a body found in Hilo on Sunday ( April 20).

Beachgoers reported finding the body floating in the water off Reed’s Bay early Sunday afternoon. They moved the body to shore and called 911.

Fire Department personnel determined that the individual was deceased. Responding patrol officers called detectives from the Criminal Investigations Section to investigate. Police have not ruled out foul play. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday (April 22) to determine the cause of death.

The victim was an elderly Caucasian male. He has been tentatively identified but his name is being withheld pending positive identification.

Police ask anyone with any information about the case to call Detective Rio Amon-Wilkins at 961-2386 or the Police Department’s non-emergency number at 935-3311.
