Hawaiʻi Island police are warning the public about an IRS scam.

A Pepeʻekeo woman reported that she received a telephone message from someone posing as an investigator from the Internal Revenue Service. When she returned the call to the Washington, D.C., number, she was told that she owed back taxes and if she didn’t pay, she would be arrested.

The scam is designed to obtain personal and financial information or to persuade the recipient to wire money to the impostors.

Police urge the public not to divulge any information if they receive a call from someone claiming to represent the IRS.
