Media Release (update)

The victim in a fatal shooting in Ka’u on Wednesday evening (May 6) has been identified as 44-year-old Larry Kuahuia of Miloli’i.

Ka’u patrol officers responded to a 10:33 p.m. report of the shooting at a Koa Lane home in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates and found the victim on Koa Lane in close proximity to the scene of the shooting.

Investigating detectives determined that 47-year-old Kevin Metcalfe was at his home around 10:30 p.m. when he discovered an intruder on his property approaching a greenhouse where Metcalfe was growing marijuana plants. Metcalfe shot at the intruder at least two times with a 12-gauge shotgun. Kuahuia ran off the property but succumbed to his wounds on Koa Lane. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police recovered the shotgun and arrested Metcalfe on suspicion of murder. He is being held at the Kona police cellblock pending possible charges while detectives continue the investigation.

An autopsy is being scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
