Media Release (update)

Detectives from the Hawaii Police Department’s Juvenile Aid Section have charged 29-year-old Van Uemura of Keaau with abuse of a family/household member and first-degree terroristic threatening in connection with an incident Wednesday (January 16).

At 7:55 a.m. Wednesday Puna patrol officers responded to a report of a domestic argument involving a weapon on Ipuaiwaha Street in the Keaau Ag Lots subdivision.

Officers assisted a 28-year-old woman in leaving the home and observed a man with an assault rifle. As a precaution, police evacuated residents from nearby homes.

Officers were able to negotiate with the suspect and he surrendered without incident an hour later.

Police arrested Uemura and held him pending further investigation.

He was charged at 11:40 a.m. Thursday (January 17) and released after posing $2,000 bail.
