Media Release (update)
Big Island police have charged a Kona man with three offenses in connection with a late-night robbery Tuesday (June 5) in Kailua-Kona.
At 1 p.m. Thursday (June 7), detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section charged 18-year-old Carlos Garrido of Kailua-Kona with robbery, assault and criminal property damage. His bail was set at $28,000 dollars. He is being held at the Kona police cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Friday (June 8).
Twenty-year-old Sione Kalavi of Kailua-Kona, who was arrested with Garrido, was released from police custody Thursday afternoon pending further investigation.
On Tuesday, Kona patrol officers responded to an 11:30 p.m. report of an assault in the parking lot of Coconut Grove Market Place. They determined that a 27-year-old Kailua-Kona man had been confronted by three young men who reportedly attacked him, threw him to the ground, beat him and took his backpack.
As the assailants prepared to flee in a blue Ford Bronco, the victim reached into the sports-utility vehicle and retrieved his backpack. The suspects then fled the scene in the SUV.
The victim suffered scrapes and a cut to his face but declined medical treatment.
At 11:47 p.m. Tuesday, police located the SUV and its occupants on a dirt road behind a gas station on Henry Street in Kailua-Kona. They arrested Garrido, Kalavi and a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of robbery.
The juvenile was released to his parents early Wednesday morning (June 6).
