Media Release

A 20-year-old Kailua-Kona man died Tuesday (February 3) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/moped crash on Alii Drive fronting Magic Sands Beach.

Responding to a 3:04 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2008 Adly jet moped and traveling south on Alii Drive when he struck the rear of a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder multi-purpose vehicle stopped on the roadway.

The driver of the Nissan, a 16-year-old Kailua-Kona girl, and her passengers, an 8-month old infant and a 17-year-old girl, were not injured.

Fire rescue personnel took the victim to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m.

The victim was not wearing a helmet. It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were factors in this case.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the third traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with four at this time last year.
