Big Island police are investigating a shooting Saturday (June 19) as a public accident.

Hawai’i Fire Department personnel and Puna patrol officers responded to a report of an apparent accidental shooting at approximately 6:56 a.m. Saturday.

It was learned that a 32-year-old Mountain View man had been shot in the chest while hunting in the Kea’au area. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center and subsequently flown in critical condition to The Queen’s Medical Center on O’ahu. 

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section are continuing the investigation.
