MEDIA RELEASE

The Ace Hardware store in the Kona Industrial area was destroyed by fire early Monday (August 14, 2000).

Police evacuated the Industrial and Old Airport Areas as a safeguard against toxic fumes from paint and other chemicals burned in the fire. Officers estimated the evacuation would remain in effect for about six hours.

Responding to a 12:50 a.m. call, Kona patrol and fire personnel arrived at the site, located at 74-5500 Kaiwi Street in Kailua-Kona, to find the building fully engulfed in flames.

Fire Department personnel from Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook and Waikoloa fought the blaze, which was still smoldering at 8 a.m.

No adjoining businesses suffered any damage as a result of the fire.

Fire inspectors were at the scene to determine the exact cause of the blaze, and there was no immediate estimate of damage to the building and its contents.
