Media Release (Revised age of victim)

Hawaii County Police are looking for a vehicle and its male driver in connection with an attempted abduction that occurred in Hilo today (March 7).

Responding to a 3:58 p.m. call, South Hilo Patrol officers contacted a 50-year-old female who reported that while she was walking on Waianuenue Avenue, a black van stopped by her and asked her if she needed a ride, which she declined. The driver of the van brandished a knife and ordered her to enter his vehicle. The driver and the van left after the female victim screamed. The vehicle was last seen heading in the west or mauka direction on Waianuenue Avenue.

The suspect is described as an African American male. His age and physical description are unknown. He was last seen wearing a black and blue top, bright colored surf shorts and a red cap.

The van is described only as a black van, unknown make, model and license plate.

Police have classified this case as an attempted kidnapping and are asking anyone with information or who may have witnessed this incident to call Officers Kayla Kahuli or Edwin Namohala Jr. at 961-2211.
