MEDIA RELEASE

A 49-year-old male visitor from California was an apparent drowning victim at Kehena Beach on the Big Islands Puna coast.

Police and Fire Rescue personnel responded to a call of a swimmer in distress at 11:07 A.M., Tuesday morning, at he remote cliffside beach about 25 miles east of Hilo.

Paramedics were unable to revive the victim, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death. Police have classified the incident as Fatal Public Accident.
