MEDIA RELEASE

A fully clothed body was discovered floating in the water Tuesday (April 18, 2000) near the second bridge of Honolii Pali.

Police received a call about the body at 1:37 p.m., and at 2:25 p.m., fire rescue personnel retrieved the body from the river. The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where death was pronounced at 3:40 p.m.

So far the body has not been identified, and because of the condition of the body, which apparently had been in the water for several days, the sex of the victim could not be immediately determined.

The victim was wearing blue jeans, dark-colored canvas type shoes with white rubber soles and a white long-sleeve buttoned-down shirt.

Police have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives are continuing the investigation.
