Hawaiʻi Island police are reminding motorists that Thursday (January 3) is the first day children return to public schools from the holiday break. Motorists should expect an increase in traffic, especially in school zones during morning and afternoon hours.
Sergeant Robert Pauole of the Traffic Services Section suggests that drivers adjust their daily schedule and start their day earlier to avoid the urge to rush while commuting to work.
Also, while driving in school zones, drivers should use caution and be attentive of children walking to school and crossing in crosswalks.
Additionally, Sergeant Pauole reminds motorists that drivers must use vehicle headlights from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise and at any other time when visibility is diminished due to insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions. The use of headlights during those hours and conditions provides better visibility for the driver and for other motorists and pedestrians.
