MEDIA RELEASE

Applicants applying for a Hawaii permit or driver’s license or renewing an existing license are having their Social Security number on the driver record electronically matched with the Social Security Administration records.

If the Social Security information doesn’t match up with the information given to the Hawaii County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section, the applicant will be notified, said Naomi O’Dell, supervising driver licensing examiner.

These applicants will be informed they must get in touch with the Social Security Administration for verification before their driver or renewal application can be processed or that they are required to submit acceptable documents for proof of name or date of birth, O’Dell said.

“If the information doesn’t match up, we are advising them to be prepared and expect delays in processing,” she said.

She said applicants may go to the Police Department website at “http://www.hawaiipolice.com” and select “driver licensing” for a listing of acceptable documents.
