MEDIA RELEASE

South Kohala police are investigating a possible drowning Tuesday afternoon (September 12, 2006).

Responding to a 4:09 p.m. call, officers learned that witnesses had pulled the body of a man out of the water in a bay between the Puako Boat Ramp and Wailea Bay.

Witnesses observed the body floating a short distance from shore in 3-4 feet of water. An orange kayak had washed ashore nearby. Police determined that the victim had launched his kayak from the Puako Boat Ramp and was last seen paddling south.

The victim has been identified but police are withholding his name pending notification of his next of kin.

Police have classified the investigation as a Coroner’s Inquest. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information about this case to call Officer Chad Taniyama from the South Kohala police station at 887-3080.
