During the week of October 28-November 3, 2002, Big Island police arrested 13 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 737 DUI arrests, compared to 683 during the same period last year, an increase of percent.

There have been 1,883 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,906 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1 percent.

There have been 22 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 24 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to 13 during the same period last year, a decrease of 77 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
