MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of January 1-5, 2003, Big Island police arrested seven motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident.

So far this year, there have been seven DUI arrests, compared to 10 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent.

There have been 25 major accidents so far this year, compared to 31 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19 percent.

There have been no confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to none during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
