During the week of January 19-25, 2004, Big Island police arrested nine motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident.

So far this year, there have been 67 DUI arrests, compared to 37 during the same period last year, an increase of 81 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 147 major accidents so far this year, compared to 146 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.7 percent.

There has been one fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to two for the same period last year, a decrease of 50 percent. There have been no fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to one at this time last year. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
