During the week of January 20-26, 2003, Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 39 DUI arrests, compared to 52 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25 percent.

There have been 148 major accidents so far this year, compared to 136 during the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent.

There have been two traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to one during the same period last year, and increase of 100 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
