MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of January 3-9, 2000, Big Island police arrested 35 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 45 DUI arrests, a 41 percent increase over the 32 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 52 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 64, compared to 42 during the same period last year, an increase of 52 percent.

There has been one traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to none during the same period last year.
