During the week of January 26-February 1, 2004, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 86 DUI arrests, compared to 58 during the same period last year, an increase of 48 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 191 major accidents so far this year, compared to 191 during the same period last year.

There has been one traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to two for the same period last year, a decrease of 50 percent. There have been no fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to one at this time last year. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
