MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of February 11-18, 2002, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 115 DUI arrests, a 13 percent decrease from the 132 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 279 major accidents so far this year, compared to 300 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.

There have been five traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to none during the same period last year. The DUI fatality count so far this year is one, compared to none during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
