During the week of February 7-13, 2000, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 177 DUI arrests, a 57 percent increase over the 113 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 33 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 260, compared to 244 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.
There have been three traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to one during the same period last year, an increase of 200 percent.
Two of this year’s three traffic fatalities, or 67 percent, have been alcohol-related.
