During the week of March 10-16, 2003, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 148 DUI arrests, compared to 172 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14 percent.

There have been 457 major accidents so far this year, compared to 456 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.22 percent.

There have been two fatalities so far this year, compared to 10 for the same period last year, a decrease of 80 percent. There has been one fatality attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to four DUI-related fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 75 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
