MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of March 19-26, 2001, Big Island police arrested seven motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accidents, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 196 DUI arrests, a 34 percent decrease from the 299 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 534 major accidents so far this year, compared to 512 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.

There have been three traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to seven during the same period last year, a decrease of 57 percent.
