During the week of March 6-12, 2000, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 253 DUI arrests, a 10 percent increase over the 231 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 34 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 418, compared to 400 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.

There have been seven traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to three during the same period last year, an increase of 133 percent.

Two of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 29 percent, have been alcohol-related.
