MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of March 31-April 6, 2003, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and five were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 192 DUI arrests, compared to 219 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12 percent.

There have been 583 major accidents so far this year, compared to 581 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.34 percent.

There have been six fatalities so far this year, compared to 11 for the same period last year, a decrease 45 percent. There has been one fatality attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to four DUI-related fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 75 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
