MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of April 9-15, 2001, Big Island police arrested 11 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic collision and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 226 DUI arrests, a 38 percent decrease from the 367 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 663 major accidents so far this year, compared to 628 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.

There have been eight traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to nine during the same period last year, a decrease of 11 percent.
