During the week of April 12-18, 2004, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 299 DUI arrests, compared to 225 during the same period last year, an increase of 33 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 729 major accidents so far this year, compared to 662 during the same period last year, an increase of 10 percent.

There have been 17 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to seven for the same period last year, an increase of 143 percent. There have been no fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to three at this time last year. There has been one drug-related fatality so far this year, compared to two fatalities at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
