MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of April 21-27, 2003, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 260 DUI arrests, compared to 251 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.

There have been 734 major accidents so far this year, compared to 704 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.

There have been seven fatalities so far this year, compared to 14 for the same period last year, a decrease 50 percent. There has been one fatality attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to five DUI-related fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 80 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
