During the week of March 27-April 2, 2000, Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 326 DUI arrests, a 4 percent decrease from the 341 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 39 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 557, compared to 524 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
There have been seven traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to three during the same period last year, an increase of 133 percent.
Two of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 29 percent, have been alcohol-related.
