During the week of April 29-May 5, 2002, Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and six were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 266 DUI arrests, the same number of motorists as were arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 755 major accidents so far this year, compared to 815 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.

There have been 14 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 27 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to the same number during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
