During the week of May 8-14, 2000, Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and six were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 443 DUI arrests, an 11 percent decrease from the 499 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 36 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 786, compared to 795 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1 percent.
There have been 10 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to five during the same period last year, an increase of 100 percent.
Four of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 40 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related.
