During the week of June 18-24, 2001, Big Island police arrested 13 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers arrested was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 360 DUI arrests, a 39 percent decrease from the 590 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 1,090 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,030 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.

There have been 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 19 during the same period last year, an increase of 26 percent. Three of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to nine at the same time last year, a decrease of 67 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
