During the week of May 30-June 4, 2000, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 519 DUI arrests, a 7 percent decrease from the 560 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 31 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 900, compared to 917 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2 percent.

There have been 10 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to nine during the same period last year, an increase of 11 percent.

Four of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 40 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related.
