During the week of June 5-11, 2000, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 545 DUI arrests, a 9 percent decrease from the 597 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 47 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 947, compared to 955 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.8 percent.
There have been 12 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to nine during the same period last year, an increase of 33 percent.
Four of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 33 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related.
