During the week of June 19-25, 2000, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 590 DUI arrests, an 8 percent decrease from the 644 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 48 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,036, compared to 1,038 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.2 percent.
There have been 19 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 10 during the same period last year, an increase of 90 percent.
Four of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 21 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one, or 0.5 percent, has been confirmed as being drug-related.
