During the week of June 24-30, 2002, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and six were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 419 DUI arrests, compared to 369 during the same period last year, an increase of 14 percent.

There have been 1,073 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,135 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.

There have been 14 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 15 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to six during the same period last year, a decrease of 50 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
