During the week of July 9-15, 2001, Big Island police arrested nine motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers arrested were involved in a traffic collision and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 406 DUI arrests, a 38 percent decrease from the 653 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 1,204 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,156 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.

There have been 18 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14 percent. Three of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 10 at the same time last year, a decrease of 70 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
