During the week of July 15-21, 2002, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and one was younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 483 DUI arrests, compared to 424 during the same period last year, an increase of 14 percent.

There have been 1,194 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,252 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.

There have been 14 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 18 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to nine during the same period last year, a decrease of 67 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
