During the week of July 23-29, 2001, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers arrested were involved in traffic collisions, and five were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 444 DUI arrests, a 38 percent decrease from the 712 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 1,293 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,241 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.

There have been 18 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 24 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25 percent. Six of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 11 at the same time last year, a decrease of 45 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
