During the week of June 26-July 2, 2000, Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 611 DUI arrests, a 7 percent decrease from the 660 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 35 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,071, compared to 1,079 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.7 percent.

There have been 20 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 13 during the same period last year, an increase of 54 percent.

Four of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 20 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one, or 0.5 percent, has been confirmed as being drug-related.
