During the week of July 10-16, 2000, Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 652 DUI arrests, a 6 percent decrease from the 691 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 49 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,160, compared to 1,161 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.09 percent.
There have been 21 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 16 during the same period last year, an increase of 31 percent.
Five of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 24 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one, or 0.5 percent, has been confirmed as being drug-related.
