During the week of August 5-11, 2002, Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and one of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 528 DUI arrests, compared to 480 during the same period last year, an increase of 10 percent.

There have been 1,318 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,383 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.

There have been 17 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 19 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to nine during the same period last year, a decrease of 67 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
