MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of August 20-26, 2001, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers arrested were involved in traffic collisions, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 517 DUI arrests, a 36 percent decrease from the 814 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 1,483 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,417 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.

There have been 20 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 26 during the same period last year, a decrease of 23 percent. Six of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 11 at the same time last year, a decrease of 45 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
