MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of July 31-August 7, 2000, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and five were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 737 DUI arrests, a 2 percent decrease from the 751 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 47 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,286, compared to 1,276 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.8 percent.

There have been 24 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 16 during the same period last year, an increase of 50 percent.

Five of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 21 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one, or 4 percent, has been confirmed as being drug-related.
