During the week of August 8-13, 2000, Big Island police arrested 35 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and six were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 772 DUI arrests, a 0.9 percent increase over the 765 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 40 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,326, compared to 1,318 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.6 percent.

There have been 24 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 16 during the same period last year, an increase of 50 percent.

Five of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 21 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one has been confirmed as being drug-related.
