During the week of August 28-September 4, 2000, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and five were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 834 DUI arrests, an increase of 2 percent over the 814 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 47 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,464, compared to 1,450 during the same period last year, an increase of 1 percent.

There have been 26 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 21 during the same period last year, an increase of 24 percent.

Five of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 19 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one has been confirmed as being drug-related.
